Iain McNicoll CB CBE
Iain served 35 years in the Royal Air Force, starting as a fast-jet pilot and retiring as an air marshal in 2010. He commanded at squadron, station and group levels. His senior positions were focused on policy and on operations. He was the Ministry of Defence’s Director of Force Development and then Director General of Joint Doctrine and Concepts. In his last 2 tours he was a main board executive director, controlling a budget of £2.6Bn. He was personally accountable for the RAF front line and its readiness for operations; in addition, he was the Command Chief Information Officer and was also responsible for safety and security. Major projects included mergers and rationalisations, of No 2 Group with No 3 Group, and then of Strike Command with Personnel and Training Command. Both were delivered on time, with savings targets met and with outputs fully maintained.
Iain’s second career has been in high-level consultancy in the defence and security sectors. He is an expert in information technology/command and control, ISTAR, training and simulation.
